The South Sioux City Police Department is proud to include in its patrol division the Bike Patrol Program. Back in the early parts of 2001 two police officers of the South Sioux City Police Department felt that a bike patrol program would benefit the department and the City of South Sioux City. Those two officers laid the groundwork for the program, which resulted in a very successful patrol division. The Bike Patrol program has been credited with two DUI arrests, the apprehension of suspects involved in car break-ins, and countless others cited for traffic violations. The program has also aided in the surveillance and apprehension for those involved in gang graffiti.
The program was aided in its conception by the generous citizens of South Sioux City. Citizens from the general public, civic organizations and banking institutions helped by contributing funds to the program. These donations enabled the South Sioux City Police Department to properly equip and train their officers for this program. The cost to train and equip one officer is $1,070.00, this includes $700.00 patrol bike, $125.00 safety equipment for bike and $245.00 for uniforms and officer's personal safety equipment. To date thirteen South Sioux City Police Officers have been trained for the Bike Patrol Program.
The Patrol Bikes have been utilized for many different activities in South Sioux City. They include the annual South Ridge Yard Sale, Parades, Bike Safety Programs, Demonstrations and most recently patrolling the riverfront on the 4th of July. Officer Comstock of the South Sioux City Police Department said, "I believe the program has been an overall success, the officers are getting out there and talking to the public, not just driving by in a car". The Patrol Bikes are now out on a regular basis patrolling the bike paths, the parks and the streets of South Sioux City.
