Joe Starita, Author of "I Am a Man" Speaks at SSC Library

Joe Starita , the author of "I Am a Man: Chief Standing Bear's Journey for Justice", Nebraska's reading choice for the 2012 One Book One     Nebraska statewide reading program, will speak at the South Sioux City Public Library on Saturday August 11^th at 2pm.

 Standing Bear: How an Indian Chief Set Off on a 600-Mile Journey to Bury His Son and Ended Up Beating the U.S. Army in a Federal Courtroom discusses the legal, social and political importance of the landmark 1879 decision in which a judge declared that Ponca Chief Standing Bear was "a person" within the meaning of the law and entitled to the same        Constitutional protections as white citizens.

 Before joining the journalism faculty in 2000, Starita spent 13 years at the Miami Herald, where he served as the paper's New York bureau chief from 1983-1987. Interested in American Indian history and culture since his youth, Starita returned to his native Nebraska in 1992 and began work on a three-year book project about five generations of an Indian family. "The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge - A Lakota Odyssey" was published in 1995, has been translated into six foreign languages and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize

 This One Book One Nebraska event is made possible through the Nebraska      Humanities Council.  The Nebraska       Humanities Council (NHC) provides major funding for this program. The NHC       receives support from the National        Endowment for the Humanities, the       Nebraska State Legislature, the Nebraska Cultural Endowment and private donations
